Make a Commitment right now to end your porn addiction!

Steps to take that will empower you to become a loving human being and serve God.

10 Steps to Love – Replace porn with Love 1 hour and 57 minutes of meditation on Love.

Let’s start with our Burning Desires

Below is a complete 20-step Christian workshop framework that can be used in a church, recovery group, men’s ministry, counseling setting, or one-on-one discipleship.

BREAKING FREE

A 20-Step Christian Workshop for Pornography Addiction

Theme: Freedom • Healing • Purity • Accountability • Grace • Restoration

Key Verse

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
— John 8:36

Purpose of the Workshop

Pornography can become a destructive cycle involving temptation, secrecy, shame, isolation, and repeated behavior. This workshop approaches recovery through Christian discipleship while also encouraging practical behavioral change, accountability, healthy relationships, and professional help when needed.

The goal is not simply to stop looking at pornography. The deeper goal is to develop a life in which pornography is no longer being used to meet emotional, relational, spiritual, or sexual needs.

STEP 1 — ADMIT THE PROBLEM

Bible Verse: Proverbs 28:13

“Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.”

Freedom begins with honesty.

Exercise: Write privately:

  • How has pornography affected my life?

  • How long has it been a problem?

  • What have I lost because of it?

  • What am I afraid will happen if I continue?

Declaration:
“I will stop hiding from the truth.”

STEP 2 — BELIEVE FREEDOM IS POSSIBLE

Bible Verse: John 8:36

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

Do not define your future by your past behavior.

Exercise: Complete:

“Freedom from pornography would allow me to __________.”

List five things you hope will change.

STEP 3 — RECEIVE GOD’S GRACE

Bible Verse: Romans 8:1

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

Shame often says, “Hide.”

Grace says, “Come into the light.”

Recovery based entirely on self-hatred usually creates more secrecy. Christian recovery begins with repentance combined with grace.

Discussion: What is the difference between conviction that leads to change and condemnation that leads to hopelessness?

STEP 4 — BRING THE SECRET INTO THE LIGHT

Bible Verse: James 5:16

“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.”

Choose a trustworthy person such as a mature Christian mentor, pastor, counselor, recovery leader, or accountability partner.

Exercise: Identify:

My accountability person: __________

When I will contact them: __________

How often we will talk: __________

STEP 5 — IDENTIFY YOUR TRIGGERS

Bible Verse: Proverbs 4:23

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Pornography use often has recognizable triggers.

Common triggers include:

  • Loneliness

  • Stress

  • Anger

  • Rejection

  • Boredom

  • Anxiety

  • Sexual frustration

  • Alcohol or drugs

  • Social media

  • Being alone late at night

  • Conflict with a spouse

  • Feeling unwanted

Exercise: Write your five strongest triggers.

STEP 6 — UNDERSTAND YOUR CYCLE

Many people experience a pattern such as:

Trigger → Thought → Urge → Opportunity → Pornography → Temporary Relief → Shame → Secrecy → New Trigger

Bible Verse: James 1:14–15

James describes temptation as a process that grows when desire is allowed to take control.

Exercise: Draw your personal cycle.

Then circle the earliest point where you could interrupt it.

STEP 7 — REMOVE EASY ACCESS

Bible Verse: Romans 13:14

“…do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.”

Do not depend on willpower alone.

Change the environment.

Action Plan:

  • Remove saved pornography.

  • Unfollow triggering accounts.

  • Move devices out of private areas when necessary.

  • Avoid taking the phone to bed.

  • Use appropriate filtering/accountability technology.

  • Give an accountability partner access where appropriate.

  • Establish nighttime internet boundaries.

Principle: Make the healthy choice easier and the destructive choice harder.

STEP 8 — LEARN TO FLEE TEMPTATION

Bible Verse: 2 Timothy 2:22

“Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace…”

Some temptations should not be debated.

Leave the room. Put down the phone. Take a walk. Call someone. Change your environment.

The 5-Minute Response:

When temptation begins:

STOP → MOVE → PRAY → CONTACT → REDIRECT

Practice this before the next temptation arrives.

STEP 9 — CHANGE THE THOUGHT PATTERN

Bible Verse: Romans 12:2

“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Learn to recognize thoughts such as:

“I deserve this.”

“Just once.”

“No one will know.”

“I’ve already failed anyway.”

Replace them with truth.

Exercise:

Old thought: __________

Truth: __________

New response: __________

STEP 10 — LEARN TO SEE PEOPLE DIFFERENTLY

Bible Verse: 1 Timothy 5:2

Paul teaches believers to treat others “with absolute purity.”

Pornography can train a person to see bodies as products for personal gratification.

Christian recovery seeks to restore the recognition that every person possesses dignity and should be treated as a whole human being rather than an object.

Exercise: Practice mentally replacing objectifying thoughts with:

“This is a person with dignity, a life, relationships, hopes, and value before God.”

STEP 11 — DEAL WITH LONELINESS

Bible Verse: Ecclesiastes 4:9–10

“Two are better than one… If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.”

Isolation feeds many addictions.

Recovery needs relationships.

Challenge: Identify three healthy relationships you can strengthen.

Schedule one meaningful conversation this week.

STEP 12 — DEVELOP HEALTHY WAYS TO HANDLE EMOTIONS

Bible Verse: Psalm 62:8

“Pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge.”

Pornography may sometimes become a way of escaping uncomfortable feelings.

Instead of asking only:

“Why did I look at pornography?”

also ask:

“What was I feeling immediately before I wanted pornography?”

Practice healthy alternatives:

Prayer, exercise, conversation, journaling, sleep, recreation, counseling, worship, service, or simply allowing yourself to experience the emotion without escaping it.

STEP 13 — BUILD ACCOUNTABILITY

Bible Verse: Galatians 6:2

“Carry each other’s burdens…”

Accountability should be honest rather than humiliating.

Have a regular conversation covering:

Temptations — Victories — Failures — Triggers — Relationships — Spiritual life — Next steps

Do not wait until after a relapse to contact someone.

Contact them when temptation begins.

STEP 14 — REBUILD INTEGRITY

Bible Verse: Psalm 51:10

“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”

Integrity means becoming the same person privately that you claim to be publicly.

Personal Inventory

Where have I been dishonest?

What have I hidden?

What needs to change?

What kind of person do I want to become?

STEP 15 — REPAIR RELATIONSHIPS WISELY

Bible Verse: Ephesians 4:25

“Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully…”

Pornography can damage trust, particularly in marriage.

Restoration may require:

  • Honesty

  • Listening

  • Patience

  • Changed behavior

  • Consistency

  • Appropriate transparency

  • Couples counseling

  • Time

Do not pressure an injured spouse or partner to “get over it.”

Trust is rebuilt through consistent trustworthy behavior.

STEP 16 — DEVELOP A NEW DAILY LIFE

Bible Verse: Philippians 4:8

“Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure… think about such things.”

Removing pornography leaves an empty space.

Fill that space intentionally.

Create a daily rhythm involving:

Prayer + Scripture + Work + Exercise + Relationships + Recreation + Service + Adequate Sleep

Exercise: Identify the hours when you are most vulnerable and intentionally plan those hours.

STEP 17 — DEVELOP HEALTHY SEXUALITY

Bible Verse: 1 Corinthians 6:19–20

“Your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit… Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

Christian sexual integrity is more than saying “no.”

It involves learning to approach sexuality with dignity, love, responsibility, faithfulness, consent, patience, and respect rather than secrecy or exploitation.

For married participants, recovery can include rebuilding emotional and physical intimacy without expecting a spouse to satisfy every urge or become responsible for preventing relapse.

STEP 18 — KNOW WHAT TO DO AFTER A RELAPSE

Bible Verse: Proverbs 24:16

“Though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again…”

A lapse should become information, not permission to abandon recovery.

If you relapse:

Stop immediately.
Tell the truth.
Contact accountability.
Identify the trigger.
Close the access point.
Determine what needs to change.
Return to your recovery plan.

Exercise: Complete:

“The next time I stumble, instead of hiding, I will __________.”

STEP 19 — PURSUE SOMETHING GREATER

Bible Verse: Galatians 5:16

“Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”

Recovery cannot consist only of constantly thinking:

“Don’t look at pornography.”

Build a life worth protecting.

Ask:

What has God called me to become?

Whom can I serve?

What relationships should I strengthen?

What talents should I develop?

What purpose should receive the energy pornography once consumed?

Exercise: Write a one-paragraph personal mission statement.

STEP 20 — MAKE A LONG-TERM FREEDOM COVENANT

Bible Verse: Philippians 3:13–14

“Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal…”

Recovery is practiced one day at a time.

My Freedom Covenant

With God’s help, I commit to living in truth rather than secrecy.

I will guard what I watch.

I will recognize my triggers.

I will reach out when temptation begins.

I will pursue healthy relationships.

I will accept correction.

I will seek professional help when I need it.

If I stumble, I will tell the truth and return to the path of recovery.

I will pursue purity not merely because I want to escape pornography, but because I want my life, mind, relationships, and sexuality to reflect love and honor God.

DAILY RECOVERY CHECK-IN

Each day ask:

1. How am I feeling today?

2. What triggered me today?

3. Did I encounter pornography or sexually triggering material?

4. How did I respond?

5. Have I been completely honest today?

6. Who did I connect with?

7. What am I grateful for?

8. What do I need from God today?

LEADER’S CORE MESSAGE

The workshop should repeatedly communicate four truths:

Pornography thrives in secrecy.
Recovery grows through honesty.
Shame is not a recovery plan.
Freedom requires both spiritual growth and practical change.

Participants who feel unable to control their pornography use despite repeated efforts, whose behavior is escalating, or whose pornography use is seriously affecting marriage, employment, finances, or daily functioning should be encouraged to seek help from a qualified mental-health professional experienced with compulsive sexual behavior, alongside whatever pastoral support they choose.

CLOSING PRAYER

Father,

Bring into the light what we have hidden in darkness. Give us wisdom to recognize temptation before it controls our actions. Renew our minds, strengthen our hearts, and teach us to see ourselves and others through Your love.

Give us courage to tell the truth, humility to receive help, and strength to establish boundaries. Restore relationships that have been injured and teach us to live with integrity when no one else is watching.

When we stumble, help us return to You rather than hide from You. Replace isolation with relationship, shame with grace, selfishness with love, and bondage with freedom.

Create in us pure hearts and steadfast spirits. May our lives honor You publicly and privately.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
